Same answer as before:
"Well, seeing as I was actually 22 when I was there, I can't answer based on personal experience. But I knew a good number of 18 years olds in Vietnam - on the American side, that is. I didn't know any of the 18 year old Vietnamese on the other side.
My recollection is that at first it was for many an "adventure", kind of like being in a John Wayne movie. But for most that changed fast, usually when they saw someone get killed or killed someone themselves. After that, it was scary ALL the time, very tense and scary, just keeping your head down and hoping to make it out of there in one piece."

I wasn't in the war, I was only 16 or17 when I got my draft card in 1973. I was not happy when I got it and could only imagine what it was like to have to go over seas to fight a war we had no business being in. I had friends whos brothers or cousins went. One did not come back. My cousin served and he was very proud to serve. We were proud of him as well. He did his duty. I didn't have to go since I was still in high school and the war was over by 1975 when I graduated. Draft was also abolished at that time. It had to be tough for an 18 year old that is just getting to know what life is all about. Your taken from your family in a land halfway around the world. Its a tragedy!!
My son is 18 now and I worry about him having to fight a war with a country that makes no difference!! All these countries governments involved don't care that you die. The big picture is your only a number.
On the otherhand, I love my country and would fight to this day for a just cause.

not happy. I think one "quote" I've heard often and really the only thing I recall from history for the Vietnam war.
the life expectancy of a grunt hitting the ground in Vietnam was like 6 days?!
(or maybe hours or maybe weeks)..the only thing that really stuck out was the number 6...
either way..all three numbers are staggeringly telling of a very hellacious episode in someones life to know that your life expectency already has a "number' on it..
