Well, we know the definition of man, but what does "hu" mean? For that matter, what does "wo" mean?

Human is all mankind...woman is part of man therefore equal representation for both man and woman is in regards to human.

But give it a whirl...I'd like to see if it catches!

In my mother tongue - serbian - you have separate words for "man" and "husband", but you only have one and the same word for "woman" and "wife".
Hence you can say "man and wife". And thinking about it, haven't I heard that at church weddings before - I pronounce you man and wife?
Obviously, it is rooted very deeply.
