I am psychologist who works in the area of autism spectrum disorders, ADHD and learning disabilities. I'm wondering if people could tell me about books or websites that they have found PERSONALLY helpful. Please do not give me a long list, I can research websites and Amazon on my own. I'm just wondering about people's EXPERIENCES, so I can make good recommendations to other parents, families and clients.

One of the first books I read after my son was diagnosed was "Thinking in Pictures" by Temple Grandin. I have since read numerous books on autism but that is still my favorite and the one I always suggest people read first after receiving a diagnoses for one of their children. It also helped me understand a lot about myself. I think it is important to read a book that sheds light and offers hope, especially to start.

This is just an archive now, but when my kids were diagnosed, it was the most extensive and beneficial website I had bookmarked

as far as books, other's have listed a few, but my favorite was 'Pretending to be Normal' by Liane Willey. She speaks of her life in light of her daughter's aspergers diagnosis, and seeks her own diagnosis as an adult. Truly amazing insight to some of the stims and sensory issues. Helpful with both my aspie and my severe autie.

I found "Autism for Dummies" to be very helpful, not only for myself as a teacher of these students, but also to recommend to parents. It is written in simple language by Stephen Shore.
