The battery is completely dead, no lights, can't even get into the trunk, only the driver side door will unlock with a key. Is there anyway I can get into the trunk now where I have jumper cables?

I still can't get into my trunk, car manual says my key should open the trunk but it won't, it turns but will not unlock.
I have a battery charger now so I don't need the cables, right?
The manual also says I can hook the battery cables to the emergency posts under the hood, which means I don't even need to get to the battery under the back seat. Can I hood the battery to the emergency post under hood also? It didn't mention that.

I don't think any of these "answerers" have ever owned or worked on an Audi. Otherwise, they would mention the under hood emergency start/jump post right away. You do not need to get under the seat. Either a battery charger or jumper cables with + attached to the post, and - attached to a bolt or bracket on the engine will do what you need. Once started, its important to be sure the battery is receiving a charge, or else you'll be jumping it again very soon.

A 96 A6 should have rear seats that fold down that will allow access to Trunk we call it a boot in UK the release catches are on the top of rear seat .Connect the positive terminal of the discharged battery to the positive terminal of the good battery. The negative terminal should be connected to the cylinder block or frame using your other cable. Now start the car with the good battery keep it running whilst trying to start your car.If your cars battery is dead flat and yours sounds as if it is it may have to accept a charge for several minutes before it will start. When your car is started it is important to remove the cables in the REVERSE order that you put them on.You do not have to reset your computer it will reset automatically.Good luck Cat Lady Mick UK own and work on Audis.

Do the rear seats fold down?

When you do finaly get jumper cables, let the other car idle for 10-15 minutes while hooked up to your car before even trying to start it.

When you do start it DON"T push on the gas pedal. High engine speeds will fry the other cars alternator.!!

at that year i don't think you have DBW (drive by wire) you have cables so you just start it up ..IF it does not idle right ..
before you start it put the ignition on for 30sec (don't touch any pedals) and then start it - that would be the Throttle body alignment procedure .. but i doubt u need to do that for your 96.
