Young's double slit experiment shows that light behaves as waves since it creates fringes after passing through the two slits.

THE NATURE OF LIGHT

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Particles
We think of particles as those solid objects that we come across in our ordinary lives.
Physical properties of Particles are things like position, velocity, momentum, energy.
When a particle encounters a barrier, it either goes through or it doesn't go through, or it breaks into new particles.
A particle travelling towards you is an actual massive physical object moving through space.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Light as a Particle
Light seems most obviously a wave, since it has been observed to undergo interference, and the property of color can be shown to correspond to wavelength
The major problem is that there seems to be no medium, light can travel through the vacuum of space, in this sense light is clearly like a particle.
Einstein won his Nobel Prize for demonstrating the Photoelectric effect, in which he showed that the capacity of light to create a current in a photo diode depends only on the frequency of the light and not on the intensity or amplitude of the light.
The accepted interpretation of this result is that atoms can only absorb energy in discrete units, many small bursts of energy that add up to the same thing will not do the trick.
Light must then come a discrete units, like particles.
The name given to a particle of light is the photon.
The energy of a photon is determined by its frequency (colour )

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wave - Particle Duality
The upshot of all this is that waves and particles are not two types of physical objects.
Wave and Particle are two ways of describing every object, two sets of properties that may or may not come into play depending on circumstance.
For instance, the wavelength of a baseball would only be apparent or relevant if it were moving at very close to the speed of light ( this experiment has not been done )
The typical amount of energy carried by a quantum of water waves would be similar to that of microwave radiation, about 10-24Joules.

Diffraction and dispersion are best examples to demonstrate the wave nature of light. Photoelectricity is the best example of the particulate nature of light and Quantum theory brought both together.

The particle is a photon. it has a molecular weight (think starteck,,,,photon torpedoes..produces immense heat. chk the sun..photon energy...the universe is a very interesting place to live and every day is discovery!
