Have to agree on the words of caution about upload and download speeds - any "up to 8 Mbps" service might be less reliable than one offering 500 kbps or 1 Mbps {= 1000 kbps}

A few years ago, when it was more expensive to get online (ISPs were charging 39.99/month for a 500 kbps connection) it was uncommon to get 1 Mbps or 2 Mbps service without paying business rates (back in 2000/2001/2002)

From about 2003/2004 1 Mbps and 2 Mbps was more common and became cheaper. Then other ISP services using their own networks (Bulldog, Easynet/UK Online) came along and started to offer faster speeds.

In 2005 my friend went onto 8 Mbps with Bulldog. In 2006, BT Wholesale started to offer DSL Max service for all ISPs and many now get "up to 8 Mbps". Some ISPs (such as "Be" unlimited) can now offer even faster speeds.

To find out the companies offering service in your area, I suggest you visit SamKnows and use the exchange search. BT and ISPs which depend on BT only off "up to 8 Mbps" at present but others may offer faster, if you're lucky enough to live in areas they serve. Good luck.

It really only becomes important if you want to stream video game play or use one of the voip services.But the higher you go in mbps the more expensive it becomes.

1mbps Means 1024 KBits of Data per second you can send/Recieve.

Obviously, more mbps, more speed.

In Local Networks. it is Mega Bytes, becuase they are faster.

so, 1mbps network on internet means you can send 128*1024 Characters per second to the internet.

MBPS means Megabits per second. (a megabit is smaller than a Megabyte) When you are shopping for internet service, you want the fastest or highest Megabit rating possible for the fastest internet.

Previous answers correct, but words of caution. Your download speed will probably be quoted as "up to" x mbps and the reality will depend on such factors as your physical distance from you local exchange (where you are dependant on copper wire rather than fibre optics) and how much traffic is concurrently flowing. You will also probably find that your actual up-load speed is considerably slower.
