Sri Lanka is one of the relatively larger Islands of the world. It is slightly smaller than Madagascar but nowhere near as large as Greenland (the world's largest island). Sri Lanka is located off of the Southeast coast of India and is the source of much internal conflicts and civil wars. What most people don't know is that Sri Lanka is one of the top five most deadly warzones in the Southeast Asia. Even today conflict rages on in Sri Lanka. The conflict is a result of numerous causes. The religious differences in the region account for much of the internal strife. The island is divided by two main religions: Hinduism and Islam. These two religions have never coinsided peacefully except for a very breif period in India/Pakistan under the Mugal Empire some 700 years ago. Every other place the two religions have met, blood has resulted. Sri Lanka is no exception. Also, today, Sri Lanka is under the control of a dictatorship as are most of the warzones in the world. While much of the people seek freedom from oppression, the Sri Lankan government abuses the people and causes the conflict to escalate ever more. Sri Lanka is simply another Cuba, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Columbia, Congo, and countless other third world nations that are abused by dictatorships.

Sri Lanka, officially the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka (Sinhalese: , Tamil: இலங்கை; known as Ceylon before 1972) is an island nation in South Asia, located about 31 kilometers (18½ mi) off the southern coast of India. Originally known as Heladiva, it is home to more than 20 million people.

Sri Lanka is a strategic naval link between West Asia and South East Asia and has been a centre of Buddhist religion and culture from ancient times. Today, Sri Lanka is a multi-religious and multi-ethnic nation.

The island of Sri Lanka lies in the Indian Ocean, to the southwest of the Bay of Bengal and to the southeast of the Arabian Sea. It is separated from the Indian subcontinent by the Gulf of Mannar and the Palk Strait
