I know there are alternate border crossings that are not too far away, but I am not sure on what road they are or how to find them.

Without knowing your origination point and destination point, it's difficult to give you a "good" answer. But, I can give you a couple of alternatives.

From 15 south, take the PR 202 exit east, to PR 223 south, cross at Rouses Point (US Hwy 11) continue on 11 until it returns to I-87...this adds about 12 miles.

Another route..Take same exit off 15 south...go west to Hemmingford, turn south on PR 219 cross at border (NY SR 22) continue south to US Hwy 11, go east to I-87

Please keep this info a secret!

(1) Mr No Name (3rd Answerer) is right but it is not 12 miles if you turn right from QC Rte 202 at an intersection at which there is a sign promoting a local winery; follow that country road until it ends then turn left. You will come out at QC 223 right at the border (where there is a good duty-free shop).

(2) There is also another nearby rural crossing (without a duty free) - at least there was 5 years ago when I last used it: After getting off of 15 onto 202east take your first right onto QC 217.

NOTE: the QC 223/US 11 crossing is usually lickety-spit, but not late Friday and Saturday (southward) and Saturday and Sunday (northward) summer afternoons with all the Canadians headed toward Lake Champlain landings with their boats.

whichever direction you are going, you can find a back-roads crossing not far in either direction.

the other person gave good southbound directions.

if heading north, get off I-87 at exit 42, go east on UD 11 a few miles, and turn right on Route 276, which will take you to the border... follow Quebec route 221 until it meets 202 and turn left. 202 brings you back to 15.
