Fluid is pumped by a pump though the valve body into spring loaded clutches, to apply or release gears.

Shifting is controlled in the valve body by a combination of: Manual shift position, (the shifter) Governor pressure, (hydraulic pressure directly related to vehicle speed) Detent pressure, (hydraulic pressure directly related to throttle angle) and Line pressure, (the pressure from the main pump)
