In Northern England it used to be common place to employ a "Knocker Up". A bloke would go around to peoples houses to collect a few pennies in a Friday night as his wages and then for the following week he would rattle on peoples bedroom windows with a long pole until they had been "knocked up" ( another origin of the popular term) Sometimes he would be employed by a mill to do this job - in which case he would probably of had a company alarm clock or watch.

Some people wake up at the same time everyday, I have a habit of waking up at 8:30, no matter what time I go to bed. Maybe they lived on a farm, and a cockeral crowed at the right time every morning, (or night?). If they lived in the city the church bells might wake them, or the guys who call out the time every hour, (night watchmen?). But there might be some poor servant who had to get up early and wake everyone up!

They had " knocker-uppers" who had a long stick for tapping on the front bedroom windows. it was usually the same person who put out the gas street lamps in a morning. Part way up the stick was a cup for extinguishing the light. It started mainly for the early mornings for factories.

They went to bed early, not haveing electricity and all there really isn't that much to do once the sun goes down....hence the old saying "early to bed and early to rise makes one healthy wealthy and wise"... the roosters helped some though..

by the sound of the church bells..they were rung at hourly intervals. Also by a bodily mecchanism that measures the amount of light present and relates it to the time.

To the clanging of church bells!!
And it would also be some poor sod's job to go around knocking on windows to wake them up of a morning! (Usually the street lamp guy - who would go around extinguishing the lamps!)
