Dismissed, as in from a job or hired position. This usually refers to being dismissed from the position through no fault of the employee's - the reason is usually due to budget cuts, rearranging the business structure, etc.

As in, "Shirley was laid off [dismissed] from her job at the factory."

This is not the same as being fired. "Laid off" is a way of being dismissed without negative connotations. To be laid off simply means (from the employer's position) that your position is no longer required. There is a signifcant difference in these two terms if you were seeking to collect unemployment benefits. If you are laid off, you collect benefits. If you are fired, you do not.

A person is "laid off" when the company cannot use his/her services and is cutting back on expenses. Laid off means you can be recalled by the company to return to work, you are not fired.
