If I were to transplant a gardenia plant outside, would it last the winter and rebloom in the spring?

gardenias in zone 5"
********** Question
Hi, My grandmother has 2 very large gardenias that she has been growing for many years in her home. She drags them outside every summer and inside again every fall. She is unable to do this and is looking to get rid of them. I cannot bear to have her throw them away and I just don't have the room/light to keep them in my house. I live in Zone 5 and these are older gardenias (I don't know the variety). Does anyone know if they would even have a chance of survival outside if I planted them right next to the house and insulated them? What side of the house has the best protection? What would be best to insulate them? Or does anyone have any ideas of how to keep them alive with minimal light in a basement or heated garage? I would greatly appreciate ANY ideas anyone had. Thank you.
Mandy

Hi Mandy,
Sorry, don't shoot the messenger! Gardenias are only hardy to zone 8 so if you put it outside in zone 5 you won't have to worry about any longer, it will be dead before winter even gets started. I don't believe the basement or garage will work either, it won't get the required light. Do you know anyone who would love the plants as much as Grandma and maybe someday when you have a different house you could get them back? (Just trying)
Best,
Diane

You need to know what zone you are in..........Apparently your grandma knows.........

Depends on where you are located. If you have cold winters, the plant could not survive outdoors. Why don't you put it into a big container so the root system will establish and leave it outdoors. Then, if a cold spell hits, bring the container inside. If it can survive the winter ok, then replant in a sheltered location but be sure to water, as many plants dry out in a cold spell. Best wishes, be sure to watch for spider mites and wash off with a mild solution of water and alcohol.

Gardenias are not freeze tolerant. I lost all my gardenias to the cold this winter which had a night temperature range of 7 to 28 degrees.

If you live in a zone 8 or higher, sure, you'd have no problems. That's Georgia, Alabama, Florida, California, maybe parts of Tenn.

But if you're in th MidWest, they won't make it in the winter.
