It's not important. But it is fun.

Baseball has very different rules, although rounders was one of the games that influenced baseball.

Important? Well, that's not an adjective that I'd apply to any sport. Popular, though, yes, that's a far better word. But the same question, and the same answer, applies to every sport - it's popularity depends on where you are and where you grew up.

Rounders itself isn't a particularly popular game anywhere. Baseball is played in the US, Canada, Mexico, Venezuela, Brazil, Columbia, Nicaragua, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Aruba, the Netherlands, Italy, England (yes, England), South Africa, Israel, Russia, Japan, Taiwan, Korea and Australia. I may be missing a few. And it's growing in popularity.

Baseball is also called the thinking person's game. Yes, it takes a broad range of physical skills to play baseball, but if you were to compare it to the age-old games of all types, the best comparison is probably to chess, in terms of the intellectual challenges of playing and managing a game.

Can anything like that be said of rounders?

It is a game played everywhere, in parks, playgrounds, and prison yards, in back alleys and farmers fields, by small children and old men, raw amateurs and millionaire professionals. It is a leisurely game that demands blinding speed. It is the only game in which the defense has the ball. It follows the seasons beginning each year with the expectancy of spring time, and ending with the hard facts of autumn. Americans have played baseball for more then 200 years, while they conquered a continent, fought at war with one another, struggled over labor and civil rights, and the meaning of freedom. Baseball is a deeply conservative game that manages to be years ahead of it’s time. It is an American odyssey that links sons and daughters to fathers and grandfathers. It also reflects age old American tensions between workers and owners, scandal and reform, the individual and the collective. It is a game in which every player is measured against all of those who have gone before them. “But most of all baseball is about time and timelessness, speed and grace, failure and success, and in the end coming home” ( Burns, K) .

Almost all of the world pays rapt attention to Soccer and while it is developing a following in the US it gets nowhere near the attention here that it does elsewhere. In the US the sports that most people pay attention to are our football, and baseball. The PBS network did a program on the history of baseball, I think the reporter's name might have been Ken Burns. In any event, the game's attraction really took off in the late 1890's and early 1900's. Exciting pennant races, enormously talented players, stunning plays, the strategies, the liesurely pace of the game so perfect for a summer afternoon or evening, and its historically rooted appeal all make baseball a time honored and beloved American tradition. It is one of the best things about our country. Interest in the game crosses all class, racial, cultural, and economic lines: you will see every type of American out at the ballpark rooting for his or her team and of course booing the umpire...another time honored tradition.
