Recommend you check the device driver:
To open Device Manager, click Start,
point to Settings,
and then click Control Panel.
Double-click System.
On the Hardware tab,
click Device Manager.
Right-cl the item to be checked and select Properties.
You should be told whether or not the item is working properly. You can also update the driver from here.

also check this way,
click on start, control panel, system, hardware, and device manager. scroll down to dvd.cd -rom drives, click on the + to open it. If your cd-rom drive is there right click on it and update the driver using your xp disk
