Turn the words into math.

More +
Times *
The Same As =
A Number x
Less -
Decreased -
Increased +

Nine more (+) than four times (*) a number (x) is the same as (=) one less than (-) twice the number (x). Find the number (x)

9+4x=-1+2x
9+4x=2x-1
9+1+4x=2x-1+1
10+4x=2x
10+4x-4x=2x-4x
10=-2x
10/-2=-2x/-2
-5=x

Double Check

Nine more than four times a number
(9+4(-5))=9-20=-11
is the same as
one less than twice the number
(2(-5)-1)=-10-1=-11

-11=-11 so x=-5

Eighty, decreased by (-) three times (*) a number (x) is the same as (=) five times (*) the number (x) increased (+) by eight. Find the number (x)

80-3x=5x+8
80-8-3x=5x+8-8
72-3x=5x
72-3x+3x=5x+3x
72=8x
72/8=8x/8
9=x

Double Check

Eighty decrease by three times a number
(80-3(9))=80-27=53
is the same as
five times the number increased by eight (5(9)+8)=45+8=53

53=53 so x=9

Hope that helps :)

You will get better at these equations really quick if you just look at them as translating exactly what they're saying in english, in the order they're saying it, into math symbols. Just remember one thing: if the phrase "less than" is being used, switch the order of the subtraction. If only "less" is used, it's in the same order (for example "5 less x" is 5-x, but "5 less THAN x" is x-5).

9 + 4n = 2n - 1

80 - 3x = 5x + 8

4x + 9 = 2x -1
Subtract nine from both sides
4x = 2x - 10
Subtract 2x from both sides
2x = - 10
Divide both sides by 2
x = -5
**********************************************************
80 - 3y = 5y + 8
Subtract 8 from both sides
72 - 3y = 5y
Add 3y to both sides
72 = 8y
Divide both sides by 8
9 = y

Hope this helps!
