Check the plug on the side of the engine. Remove the plug & spark plugs. Rap a rope on the top of the engine & pull. Check for spark. If no spark:

1. Check the points/Magneto, coil/cap, & all electrical connections for moisture & corrosion

2. Replace the plugs

i don't live on the WET coast but if that engine has points in it, it must have a distributor. it can malfunction. also the stator can be tested with a voltmeter. find a manual or the specs. and find the answer. is there a "safety" switch involved?

I got 1986 70 hp mercuy just quit fireing new coils plugs . switbox went out last year I put used one on it .it did same way wat u think?????

check for spark - if none, your coils are probably bad.
