How do you switch to 802.11g. Where do you go onto your computer to find that. I'm running Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2

Your USB adapter or Router should came with a software package which will do this for you.

802.11g is a HARDWARE spec. If your router AND your wireless adapter are both g then that is what you will connect with.

No changes in software at the computer or router are needed.
Check the specifications on your card and router.

if you have a desktop, you need a 'wireless card' to go inside the box of your unit (usb wireless also available) on lappers, its a slip in unit (into a large slot) so if ya don't have the slot, use the usb type. the cards have an install disk which will scan your unit for settings, configs, etc.
when installing, make sure to not use the default administr. settings (name/password) make up heavy duty stuff.
also, defeat the UPnP feature.
for lappers, get the microsoft 'hotfix' to resolve issues about broadcasting the units 'preferred networks': a must if you travel with the unit.
