Even focus and concentration could not stop us from thinking and continously desire of the opposite sex? Our entire life is based on the need of finding a companion. Usually people that don't find a companion live a sad life.

Why are we hardwired like this and is this good or bad?

While I do agree that there is a strong biological hardwiring to desire sex and opposite gender companionship there is this softwaring also, which we might inculcate by way of allowing indiscipline and poor self control to overwhelm our lives, that contributes to this not so graceful constant sexual desire in some.
There is a very thin dividing line between graceful appreciation of beauty and offensive display of lust. To remain in the safe realm it takes a lot of self control and grooming.
Excess of anything is bad. I consider that a reasonable amount of sexual desire and a simultaneous and equal amount of self control is a must to remain psychologically normal and socially acceptable.

All living things are hardwired to procreate, to propagate the species. Our sexual desires and the pleasure derived from it are from the same place as the desire to eat, or sleep, or be warm. We are driven to find a companion, someone without a mate can still have a full life if they have plenty of friends and family, we get some psychological needs met from relationships, these have nothing to do with sex. This wiring and desire to be with other people is necessary because as humans, we are naked slow and tasty and without society we would just have been dinner. Both have a basis in biology but our ability to think and philosophize have given it all different meanings.
These are a part of us, just as good and bad as our nose, or our feet, necessary and human.

We are human, we are meant to procreate to keep the race going. All animals do it. So of course we are hardwired. And even if you don't have a "companion" there is still the desire for sex. Some people prefer to stay single. Sex is instinct.
