Gatsby was "great" in his own mind. His money is what made him great. His overwhelming love for Daisy is what made him great.

It's an ironic title, because in the end he is anything but great. And in his quest for greatness, he becomes everything that Nick hates about "old money"

To me, Gatsby is considered great because of the charade he continued for so long.

That, by his own efforts, he rose so high in the social ranks from humble beginnings. However, there is, also, considerable irony in the title 'Great'.
