Apparently the toilet clogged yesterday, now most of my bedroom is a tub. My husband thinks that "airing out" the bedroom/carpet will get it to dry. I on the other hand think it will mold because when you step on the carpet it makes a slushy noise and water comes up between your toes in some parts. Other parts of the carpet are damp but you can tell water has gotten into it. Do we have to replace the carpet?

I would highly recommend replacement.

It is not just the mold, but think about the funky bacteria that were present! Do you ever want to sit on the floor again? Also, residual water will rot the baseboards and ruin the bottom of the drywall. Take out the carpet and pad, allow the foundation to dry and then replace with fresh carpet and pad.

Ick!

You can call in a company to dry it properly with big fans but if you let it dry out by itself it will tend to grow mold and mildew which is horrible for your respiratory system because once it gets in it is impossible to get rid of. I would pull up the carpet and dry the floor properly.

Call in a professional carpet cleaning a water extraction company. They can not only extract the water. but sanitize the carpet at the same time. I highly recommend that you have it sanitized. a company like Blackmon Mooring or Stanley Steamer is very good.

Yes. You have to pick up the carpet immediately before the floorboards become compromised. You're not saving a few bucks if the floor rots and falls out.

You need to dry it completely before relaying it. Otherwise, you will have mold. Next question would be what was in the bowl when it overflowed? You may need to get an anti-bacterial solution to prevent smells and germ build-up.
