my boyfriend has asked me to ask on here, why women make a mountain out of a molehill.However, after me screeching a bit, he has changed the question to, where does the phrase, mountain out of a molehill come from?

I don't know... But it means to EXTREMELY exaggerate something. Not all women make mountains out of molehills... Some men do it too!! It's just an exaggeration. However, it originates from a myth from the Pakatoala Tribe, who lived on a plain in Oklahoma. They lived in peace there, until all of a sudden one day, a new tribe, the Mohitonka Tribe decided to move in there as well. Wanting to keep peace in their community, they didn't protest, they even took the Mohitonka tribe members on a tour of their plain. They first showed them their "ocean" and the Mohitonka tribe said, "No! You are making an ocean out of a creek." And then they showed them their "valley" and the Mohitonka tribe said, "No! You are making a valley out of a ditch." Next, they showed them their "forest" and the Mohitonka tribe said, "No! You are making a forest out of a patch of weeds." At this point, the Pakatoala tribe was in a state of shock, because they had just found out that everything they thought was a major landmark was actually just a small unimportant part of geography. They did, however, decide to show them their final "feature." They brought the Mohitonka tribe to their "mountain." And again, their pride in their great landmark was crushed. "No!" the Mohitonka tribe exclaimed. "You are making a mountain out of a molehill!" And that is how the story goes. Apparently, "mountain out of a molehill" is the only one that stuck. Plus, "You are making a forest out of a patch of weeds!" just doesn't sound as good.
Ha!! I just made that up... Gotta say I'm a little proud of myself... Sounds pretty good, huh? :)

An idiom Americans use often is DON'T MAKE A MOUNTAIN OUT OF A MOLEHILL. This was originally a Greek saying and dates back to 200 AD. It rebukes us for making a big fuss over small issues.

well my under-standing is, i got this from my mother so if any-one knew she did. it is a old saying, could not say when it started, but i would guess back in the 18-19 hundreds.that is where one stretche's the real meaning of some-thing. and far as your boy-friend goes he is part right part wrong. way back woman where given credit for all the gossip that went on in a town. you know if you give the 1st person a small sentance to pass on, by the time it gets to the end you will come up with a totally different of what was said. so my advise to you do not beleive 90% of what you hear & about 50% of what you see
try that on your boy-friend hey baby 3 blocks over there is 4-5 house's on fire go check it out and let me know ha ha good trick

a mole hill, when viewed from our perspective is simply a small pile of dirt, while a mountain from our POV is a large pile of rock. given a simple tool one can make the mole hill go away rather quickly, but to make the mountain go away would require more tools, many people and alot of time.
so if you view a problem as a mole hill, you yourself can fix it rather easily, but if you convince yourself that it is really a mountain of a problem you can over react and seek out help you don't need to fix a problem you yourself could handle

then i suffer from MOOAMS.....Mountain Out Of A Molehill Syndrome....i do give ppl hell sometimes :( but i guess everyone is guilty of that some time or another..

It means making a big deal out of nothing..a mole hill is small and a mountain is large......and yes we are all guilty of it at some time or other!

Well to answer his first question, most women make a big deal out of nothing because they feel like their boyfriends don't respect them.
It's usually more a way of expressing frustration over not being taken seriously.
