Some of the answerers will refer you to their own website - indirectly introducing or advertising their products to you, all in the name of answering your question.

I think that falls in the area of abuse of community guidelines. I've reported several of these because they ruin the whole Answers experience for everybody. Not to mention that some of them are clearly scams and/or potential traps for unwary children.

Although, there may be times when you think that's what is happening, and actually the person is actually giving the only answer that makes sense. Last night, I answered a question about getting a background check done on oneself, and I happened to know of a reputable website that does just that. It's not my website, but I did post the name of the website for the inquirer. So, I've tried to be generous in my assumptions on this issue. If the website looks to be a direct answer and doesn't look/feel like a terrible scam, I've decided it may be a legitimate answer.

It depends on the question asked. If someone asks for a good home business, then others refer them to their links so they can have a look. I see nothing wrong with that. I don't consider it spam because someone asked for a particular thing. Spam is when you blatantly advertise when no one asked you to.
Others just come in here hoping to drastically build their organizations so they put their link into every question. That's spam.

When someone asks a question about where can they promote their website, I give them some high quality directories to check out. (Out of the many, only one is mine.)
BUT I always provide an answer related to the question. There are a bunch of answerers out there that answer every question with the exact same response which has nothing to do with the question and a link to their website.

They make money, either directly or thru increased advertising rates, on the number of hits to the spammed sites.

Probably because the same questions get asked over and over and they just post some basic answers to frequently asked questions.

There is nothing wrong, if you can't tolerate, you may avoid referring the site. However, there is nothing wrong if some one avail the opportunity they are provided by any one us.
One must take all such things very conveniently.
