Has this generation of American youth become the "What can you do for me"! Generation. Everything seems about entitlements now. Free health care, free college, free this, free that. Like some opinions as to how this may have come about, and is hard work and sacrifice a dead concept in the U.S.A

No bigjacka55 I wish it where just older Americans complaining about healthcare. In the political section free healthcare is raised as an issue often, and its from younger Americans that take a rather socialist view of entitlement. Its amazing to me, they want everything free. I sure wasn';t raised that way. Basically they all want Hillary Clinton as president, and free entitlements, is that what weve come too?

I am by the way inspired by some of your comments, like the students working on communities in Boloxi and New Orleans, or your kids working 80 hours a week, or others that work hard, my kids so far have done well too, but it does surprise me the sheer number that want everything free, sure appreciate everyones comments.

Emmmmm, no Pat, health care shouldn't be free. That system doesnt work. Theres other means to rpovide for the people than that. And education isn't neccessarily free either. If one of your kids wanted to attend Harvard, who'd pay for it? We do have a class society, but so does socialist countries, communist countries, and every other form of government. They just hide it better.

It seems that they have gotten spoiled and want everything handed to them. They don't understand that someone has to pay for this stuff. Many teachers and professors are preaching many these things to them and they start to believe it. Many of them will one day realize they were wrong and change their ways.

Shameful, fat, lazy, without morals, and think the world owes them everything, no..we have forgotten to teach our children that if you want something you have to work for it. Nothing is handed on a silver platter, but I think we have become so bogged down by seeing all these ridiculous celebrities who get paid a million dollars just by waving their hands (true, Paris Hilton was) and with technology improving and making everything so easier we forgotten the old times, its sad really. I was taught the value of hard work, I go to school and have a full time job and am perusing a phd. I hope we start realizing this mistake and start teaching our children.

free health care should be mandatory. college, well sometimes it can get way to expensive, which is ridiculous. but other then those two things, i think people should work towards what they want personally. i am 23 years old and i thing things are just changing, like they do every year. and if this gen. of kids think they deserve everything then you can blame the parents for that one buddy.
oh and by the way my husband is 20 years old, going to college full time and working full time.
me i manage a store. I'd say we aren't lazy.
health care should be free, i have many, many, many medical bills to pay because of major health problems. medical insurance is high. so i guess it's to bad when I turned 18 my parents health insurance didn't cover me anymore but hey now i get to pay for my heart problems. yay.

The "me" generation was the 70's actually.
I've met a lot of people, however Americans in general have always been selfish, as you say.
Health care SHOULD be free. LOL. What are you on about? Education too! Christ!
Don't tell me you're one of those people who kick people when they're down? Like libraries should charge fees to read books? How the heck do the poor improve their lives if we block off the means?

i am still in high school so i am in the age group you are talking about . i think a lot of the ppl. in my high school are really lazy. they dont ever do their homework and the complain they hav too much work to do. when there is a student that excels and goes much more beyond than what he or she has to, they will say that kid is weird. they think they know everything about the world, but they still live with their parents. sometimes i get scared about what this country might become

Kick out the illegal aliens and put the 16-25 yr. olds to work.... the higher the income level of the parents the dirtier the job assigned.... mandatory participation with no exceptions... military service as an alternate for males only.
First I would ramp up the educational requirements and what we call High School now would end at 16... the requirements for graduation would be, at minimum, what is now required for an AS Jr collage graduate..... Then 4 yrs labor service for ALL... then those who pass strict entrance requirements would be allowed to go to further education.... 4 yrs subsidized for all....
No leaving the country to avoid service... loss of citizenship would be the penalty.

not the ones I know. kids I taught in 6th grade are now in their early 20's. most of them work hard and earn what they need. this is a low income rural area so some have gone the welfare route, but lots of the people that now wait on me are the kids I taught years ago. my daughter is 23 and works up to 80 hours a week.

It is Generation ME. They have been raised with such a focus on high self-esteem. They believe that they are most important in the world. They have no work ethic and have a huge sense of entitlement. The US is in serious trouble.

i don't know about that. my son doesn't get anything for free. if he does were missing out. he's a hard worker and is getting himself set up for college next year. myself and his grandparents are helping him pay for it. so not all is a gloomy as your portraying. if they are getting it for free....why does it bother you? cause you had to pay or envious? if the government is finally taking a look at it and seeing that more assistance is warrented, then i think you would be happy that your children are going to get more help then we did as parents. don't we want our children to do better then us. if they are able to focus more on basic living needs when things like health care are there for them isn't that better for us? cause we know they're health care is insured, college.....not free here. but, i'm not expecting my teenager to come up with a few thousand dollars on his own. i would rather help out so he doesn't fall into that big problem of kids getting student loans and never being able to pay it back. food for thought my friend

Yes the concept of hard work ,and sacrifice is dead ,and as far as I can see they have no respect for anything. I believe it comes from a lac of discipline. You can't so much as raise a finger agents your child without going to prison.
