2. Hospitals - to study cells from biopsies to see if they are cancerous
3. Doctor's offices - to examine urine samples for bacterial infections
4. Industry - to examine products minutely for quality control
5. Taxonomists use them to describe, identify, and name new species
6. I use one at home to entertain myself by studying glop from a pond. My kids grew up sitting on the kitchen counter and peering into a scope. We were glop-ologists.

The lights on a microscope are of various intensities so you can see through thick substances eg. paper or cloth, but also through thin substances eg. water, without being blinded.
