It is interesting that the US is so homophobic, since, in a sense the US was "fathered" by a group of men called the Second Continental Congress. Specifically, the US was conceived by a group of five men - Adams, Franklin, Sherman, Jefferson and Livingston.

Who is the "father"? Well, a paternity suit would suggest that the USA has five fathers and no mother! So much for the laws that forbid civil unions.

If you consider the man who was the first in the eyes of his country you can consider it to be George Wshington . If you look at it with the author of the Declaration of Independence you have to consider Thomas Jefferson and a host of editors to his document. If you consider the father of our mandated Constitution , James Madison comes to mind. If you look at diplomacy and ingenuity you consider Benjamin Franklin and what he did to get France through negotiation to help us win our independence or you can consider an amalgam of Washington, Jefferson , Madison and Franklin and other founding fathers. But the one people remember and regard is George Washington.

Thomas Jefferson really stands out among the founding fathers in how far-reaching and long lasting many of his ideas were, but the US really doesn't have just one father.

i believe George Washington is recognized as the father of our country. Although in my opinion while he was a good president in his time, there were many other of his contemporaries that would have fit the profile. Ben Franklin for instance.
