The original Star Wars trilogy... if I'm allowed to count a trilogy as 1 - after all you can buy it in one boxed set...
If I have to pick just one, then it would have to be the Empire Strikes Back.
It's part of an epic saga covering the universal themes of good versus evil, has elements of eastern mysticism (which sets it apart from other sci-fi) with an all pervading force that is responsible for and part of life and existence, and can be harnessed for good or evil by some, and was the first ever blockbuster as we know them nowadays (including inventing the concept of franchising)...and full of highly entertaining and classic characters, action sequences, and quotable lines - what more could any film need...?

Star Trek: First Contact
(To bumblecherry: I hope the "DUNE" you are referring to is the TV mini series - the one with William Hurt - and NOT the 1984 movie. I am DUNE fan and have read the books and I found that movie fall way, way short of doing the story any justice. But hey! That's my personal opinion and I am sticking to it LOL)

'Primer' (2004)..............a baffling but mesmerising Time Travel film. Virtually no special effects and made for very little money, it's one of those films that you want to re-watch again straight away!
