One of former UBC students has put up a new website ( www.300themovie.info ) and is trying to show the real image of Persian kingdom back then.

There is also an attractive article in Time about it:

Hey Americans! Don't comment on what you realy know NOTHING about it.

I think that Persia/Iran is a great civilization. And that was why that since the time of Cirus the Great that Iran has the ambition of controling the Middle East and to be recognized a world power. If the spartans and the other greeks didn't fight you in the V century b.C., nowadays we europeans would probably be speaking some oriental language. Jealous from Iran? Bah... I don't think so...

the movie, as all movies in hollywood prodiction has its faults due to the fact that they have to make them such that they appeal to awide range of audience.

yes, the story is factual up to a point, some things we just cant know for sure after such a long time, and some facts were simply distorted.

as for western civilization being the oldest in the world, you couldnt be further off.
some sources say that it was antient egypt, some mesopothamia, and the latest claim is that it was really a civilization in india, but all agree that greece developed later.

the westerns?!! I am afraid that you are making a huge mistake. The Greeks are not "westerns", are the creators of the western civilazation. And by the time that the battle of Thermopyles happend (480 BC) most of the "westerns" were living in caves wearing skins.
The battle of Thermopyles was a battle for freedom and honor. King Xerxes wanted to finish what his father kind Dareios tried to started at 490 BC. To conquer Greece. Dareios was defeated in Marathon by the Athenians, who fought bravery (1 Athenian for 10 Persians). Greeks decide to stop him at the Thermopyles (HotGates). 7000 Greeks and 1.700.000 persian fought for 2 days. Xerxes loses were great and he didn't know what to do. Then a traitor appeared and lead the Persian behind the Greek lines. The Greeks learn about it and Leonidas said to his alies to go away. He stayed with his 300 Spartans and 700 Thespies to fight and die for freedom, for their country
After the battle of Thermopyles the Greek defeat the Persian navy at Salamina and Xerxes left Greece. He left behind his general, Mardonius to fight against the Greeks at Plataies were the Persian were defeated again and Greece was finally free from the Persian threat

to the second answer: yes, it is based on a real historical event but the movie isnt to be taken as a historical source as some parts are not factual

the greeks did not start that war. the persians invaded the greek city-states in asia minor and the greeks on the mainland decided to help their fellow greeks. the persians got mad and they attacked the greeks.

ancient greeks did not look to extend their lands because they thought non-greeks were barbarians so there was basically no use.

in short: the greeks were defending their independence

The movie is based on real facts. It's not a matter of jealousy, it's just history. (Of course there are some changes, but that's Hollywood)

i dunno what history books you are allowed to read.. IF youo are allowed to read anything other than the Quoran over there in iran...but even though i will fully admit that the persian civilization was older.. it was by no means a more advanced one. Greeks kicked persian *** 3 times and destroyed your empire.. not sure who is jealous of whom
