Yes, you do need to plant a second one unless there is another in the immediate area (does your neighbor have one?) Self-fertilizing trees are a bit of a myth. They can only self-pollinate to a degree, then they give out from lack of variety. The second tree will make both much more fertile.
Just as importantly, make sure you do nothing to kill bees, wasps and hornets in your area so that you get good pollination.

Depends on the type cherry tree you plant. Some are self pollinating while others need another tree to fruit. Check the variety you want to plant. From what I have seen, all sour cherries are self pollinating and all sweet, except Stella, need another tree to obtain fruit.

a single tree will produce fruit but not a lot if you wont more fruit plant more than 1 tree i live in tennessee and i bud these trees to make them fruit also do peaches and apples ,pears.maple,ash,red bud.been doing this for 20 years

Not if you buy one from a reputable nursery.They should know from their suppliers if the trees will bear fruit. Most fruit trees contain male and female parts.

no this is supposed to apply to apple trees.but i have one apple tree and it produces about 20 apples a year.and my cherry is doing very well.but you can check in the nursery.

No, you can get a self fritile one, but if you have two trees polination is much better.
