I agree with you. I can't believe these people are defending fat people. They chose to be that way! By eating and eating and not exercising, why should we pay for their excesses? Is not my fault they can't control themselves and they teach their chidren those same habits. Also, if we put a tax on them they might start to lose weight.

You are obviously one of those people who thinks that obesity is only from eating too much and not exercising. Granted that is the truth for many people, but it is NOT the truth for everyone. And even for them merely changing their lifestyle isn't always sufficient.

What I would say is more reasonable is a public program that incentivizes healthy lifestyles rather than penalizing poor health. There are a lot of obstacles to even highly motivated people. Let's get those obstacles out of their way. To the extent that people can change, that approach would actually have a broader benefit to more people...not just the obese... without hurting those that can't change.

The depth of people's ignorance that have posted here is amazing. It's easy to compare obesity to cigarette smoking, but you can't give up eating altogether, can you? That's the difference...you can walk away from cigarettes, because even one is not good for you. But you can't walk away from eating. Therefore, you are always exposed to your "habit"...getting a "fix" if you will. It's all around you. There is also the issue that truly healthy food is hard to come by for many people...especially if they haven't been taught about the hidden calories and additives that add to weight problems that are in so much of our food today.

As someone else on here said...an "intolerance tax" might be better suited for many of you.

Don't you really think that this tax think has gone too far. We don't have enough?

Where does society have the right to punish those that they discriminate already. It's like putting a tax on blacks or Jews. Don't you think that fat people feel just as discriminated.

If you don't like the way they look, tough.

You are exactly right! America is the fattest of all people on the planet. They tax smokers bigtime for their habit, they tax alcolhol for the excessive drinkers, They need to taxt the over eaters, who have no self control, or pride in their body. I dont want to tax fat paeople who have a medically diagnosed problem. But 90% of fat people are fat from their own doing. They want to blame others for no self control in eating too much food. And yes most fat people dont contribute. In fact they are a hinderence in the work place. Too slow, mostly lazy, and i hate to say it, Bad Hygene!! Tax them twice if they stink too.

How liberal of you,another tax.
You get Universal Health Care, you'll start taxing anybody who might cost the system money, fat people, skiers, bungi jumpers, hunters ,fishermen, car drivers, smokers (again ),anybody who's job might give them more than a paper cut.
Just think ,you can fine fat people by the pound, force them to eat prescribed foods grown by Nancy Pelousy and friends.

You have a point hidden behind the offensiveness. Certain products should be taxed higher than others - like junk food.

I agree with the previous answer. Let's tax you if your IQ is below a certain level.

Tiny why don't you start at the source, tax fast food joints, TV stations that bombard kids and adults with ads, restaurants for serving big fat portions, pseudo "juice" and soda manufacturers for sugary drink production and our government's complicity in subsidizing them

This question is a "hardy perennial" and recurs every few months: look it up.

The added costs to the health services may well be off-set by the fact that fattties die earlier.
