I have a Ps3 and can only go online with it when it is plugged into the PC itself, and the Pc has to be on. I bought a router to try and resolve this, however it says the modem needs to be pugged into both the internet and the router.
the modem has only one adsl port so I am unsure whether I need to get a new modem with two adsl ports, or get something that splits one port into two.
Thanks in advance.

You would unplug the patch cable that is hooked up to the computer (from the DSL modem) and plug this into the WAN port of the router. Then you need to plug in patch cables from the router (LAN ports) to each device (PC, PS3, etc).

Assumingly you have your broadband modem connected to the router and your pc and your ps3 both connected to the router as well. That is all you should have to do. There could be other factors though not letting the ps3 connect. I would try defaulting any settings you may have manually entered into the ps3 or you may need to lower security settings with the routers build in firewall or setup port forwarding. I would check with the router manufacturer support.

OK one step at a time.
DSL comes into the Modem, the output of the Modem currently connects to your computer.
Move that to the WAN or Internet Connection on the Router!

From the router take the LAN (local area) connections to both your computer and the PS3

DSL----To Router --- Router to --computer and PS3
