I think it as an ash tree, they are late this year.
Oak before ash summer splash, ash before oak summer soak. I wonder if it is accurate?
Leave it another month before you start to worry.

Give it a chance. Not everything buds and leafs up at the same time. Over the next couple of weeks see if the buds are fattening, if so it will break into leaf. Only if there is no sign of life by May could you say it's dead. Iv'e looked at the picture and don't know what is is.Sorry.

Not sure of the tree, but it looks like it is still alive give it time. The twigs with buds on are a good sign.

I am unable to identify this tree. But not everything leafs out at the same time. The harder wood trees take longer for the sap to reach the branches.
Give it time.
If it has buds on it, it's most likely live & kicking.

I have a tree kinda like this in my back yard and yes it leafs out very late give it a few more weeks to see if it is doing any thing yet. . . or get a branch cut it off in the center and see if there is any green on the inside of the branch I really think its going to late comming out. . .

Looks like its dead to me. If it isn't dead, then its certainly starved of light - that's clearly visible from the lack of smaller off-branches on it.

Best thing to do is cut off a smaller branch and look at its cross section - you will be able to tell from this if it's dead wood or still alive - it may just be a late developer this year if your site has been prone to a one-off, late frost or other climatic anomaly.

I'd leave it but as I say it is definately starved of light with them other trees so if it is still alive maybe cut them back to allow more light into its vicinity?

Our ash trees are very smooth barked so I can rule out ash for you. A picture of the buds you mention would have been more useful. Do some trees 'rest' some years?

The tree looks like a multitude of trees without leaves it hard to say.

I'm stumped !

Wait to see if it does get some leaves then it will be easier to identify...Some trees just leaf out later like soft maple or pin oak

Where are you at? Looks like it may be a Hickory of some type. Give it a few more weeks, may be shaded out, slow starting.

it is easy to tell if it is dead ot not grab one of the lower twigs toward the end of the branck and bend it backwards.did it snap right off? if so its dead. did it bend before it broke? if so then its still alive
