A couple of reasons:

With an American fleet in the Persian Gulf doing war games, the Iranians wanted to "draw a line in the sand" or in this case the water to keep the fleet from going any closer.

Second the sailors were taken by the Revolutionary Guard, a paramilitary group that is loyal to the extremist faction. That faction has had its support erode among the Iranian people. So they pull the old "you have to support us, were fighting the foreign invader" trick. Remember much of what a country's leadership does or says may be for domestic consumption

Recently the US/UK sent more military firepower to the Persian gulf and have probably been encroaching nearer to Iran simultaneously gathering information on Iran's nuclear program for a possible military strike at a later date. Iran needed to do something to stop this information gathering. Hopefully they will release the hostages soon. Otherwise I can't see why the UK shouldn't bomb the crap out of them. Taking another countries soldiers is basically an act of war. I think Iran would be unwise to start a war it will not win

The Brit's got a little to close and a little to careless. They should had the "shoot and scoot" order if they saw the Iranians coming at them. Some one screwed the pooch! They, the Iranians, love to watch the infidels squirm and beg. Especially the families. Remember history? President Carter? The U.S. Consulate? The 444 days? It's going to put pressure on the west. Why do you think the President of Spain lost his bid for re-election? The Iranian terrorist organization blew up those trains and said get out of Iraq or else. He said "no" and lost the election. They want Tony Blair and his party out. And when the new party comes in, they will pull their troops out. Just like here in the U.S., the Liberals want to pull out. Premature pull out. LOL, I almost wrote something else! Gulf of Tonkin? How old are you? Not the same boy'o, not the same.

Due to the U.S. detaining and finding conclusive evidence on Iranian operatives training terrorists in Iraq and the recent defection of a high ranking Iranian General. The Iranian gov. wanted to retaliate and couldn't move on the US so hit Britain , the smaller part of our coalition. A lot of people don't realize that the average age in Iran is 25-30 years old and the hard radical government is losing support. They are trying anything to find proof that their actions are justifiable.

Iran is trying to prove their existance in the powers of the world. Currently they are not recognized so they took these guys because they felt they had a chance of making the Brits look bad. Had they taken US military, I believe our response would have been close to war-like. They would not win. The Brits need to flex their power to resolve this and keep their position on the food chain.

Simple. Iran wants a bargaining chip for the nuclear debate.

The British soldiers purposely went into Iranian waters hoping to provoke another Gulf of Tonkin and start a war.

Cons love war.

Dear, they do that everyone once in a while so that the other country has to apologize for supposedly being in their waters.

It makes them feel wanted that way.
