actually java will be good if you wanna go into commercial application development. Embedded systems can allow you to program machines and this normally does not use java.
you'll need more engineering background for this. i suggest if you want to study one of these in school go for embedded systems cos it's harder to learn by yourself. java is easy. just pick a book for dummies and you can pick it up.

Firstly, embedded systems are computer systems that are built into something. They are used to control airconditioners, TVs etc. They are also used as plug in boxes in networks. They are simple to install, but lack flexibility. Sometimes they are programmed using Java.

An application you can install on your server is usually harder to install and maintain, but is cheaper and more flexible.
