Yesterday I had my first litters of baby guppies... 3 females dropped babies in 1 day! So I have a huge tank, 55 gal, with 30ish baby guppies in it. It also has 4 chinese algae eaters. I woke up this morning, and I see the algae eaters frequenting the spots where all the babies were clustered at the water line. Will they seek out and eat my babies? I know they can get aggressive as adults, but these guys are still pretty small.. none over 1.5-2". Please help, I'd like to get the CAE's out of there as soon as possible if this is the case! Thank you :)

Chinese Algae eaters. Damn, I wish they would stop selling them to people as "algae eaters". The truth is that they do, when young. However, as they mature they become more aggressive and dangerous to your other fish. They will attack, stick on and eat your other fish. That is the plain and simple truth.

For a true algae eater for a smaller tank you should have one of the breed of miniature pleco like the clown or perhaps the truly diminuative otocinclus. Peaceful and non intrusive they will take care of your algae without posing a hazard to community fish.

Hope this helps.

Will F is right on the money. I had a friend who got one for her tank and it killed all her neon tetras as it matured.

If you are looking for an algae eater, a small school of otocinclus catfish (1 1/2 inches as adults, add only to a mature tank) or one of the smaller plecos (can max out at 5 inches to 18 inches depending on which of the various species you get) would be a better choice (for both algae and your fry!).
