An IP address is like a regular address. IP stands for "Interned Protocol" What is happening is your computer "10.18.0.17" has one address, while the computer or server that you use to connect to the Internet has another address; in this case "129.215.149.97".

This is akin to a post-office. First mail -Internet traffic- goes to the post office -proxy server- then it is delivered to your house. The same thing happens when you send information over the Internet. It first goes to the proxy server, or in our example, the post office, and then is forwarded on to its final destination.

From the command prompt type in ipconfig. This gives information about your own machine. The IP address may be different the next time you log in as it is dynamically allocated from a block of similar numbers. The default router address will probably be 10.*.*.* as this particular range of addresses is only allowed local network use. You are obviously using a router, which will set this number for you, so it may be the same each time unless you have many computers - this would normally only be the case in large companies. The 129.215 range is one of many reserved for Internet use only. It will have been allocated to your ISP, and as listed is being used on a machine which acts as a proxy on your behalf to make onward connections and return the correct information to you. This method of connection probably increases your speed of access because the proxy may have a large store of information cached in memory. It also improves security for you, as any attack will probably be blocked by their server. You still need firewall, this is not a hundred percent guarantee. You will not see this information from the command line as it id unrelated to your machine. There are millions of addresses out there, each relating to one network interface of a specific machine, this is the equivalent to a telephone number for the machine. Go to your router configuration, you will see yet another address relating to itself, this also may change after a reboot or power off.
see : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_address for very detailed information with plenty of other links.

First of all it's ipconfig /all

If you have an address starting with a 10 it means you are inside a network. Maybe work or school. Once you get out to the internet the ips change because they are on a different network so to speak.

If you go to the command line...you can try a ping command. But I think places like Yahoo and Google do not respond to pings in order to protect themselves.

Well as stated above there are two types of IP addresses, public and private. If you are on a Local Network (which you are) your private IP is 10.18.0.17 then that routes you to your proxy server of 129.215.149.97 which connects you to the internet.

Now if you didn't setup that proxy you need to find out how it became your address.

How are you connecting? School, office, home dsl.. if its home dsl you need to get with your DSL provider and verify that is the correct information.

In most home users a proxy will NOT BE FOUND! It is a security issue period.

10.18.0.17 is your machine's IP address. It is a local address specific to your network. 129.215.149.97 is a proxy server address. If you have a number of machines on your network, to the internet it would always look like 129.215.149.97 no matter which machine was sending the ipconfig request. It is a SHARED address for all of your machines to use on the Net.
