Affirmative Action is not "giving" minorities anything. The point of affirmative action is to protect the rights of minorities and give them the same opportunities that white men have enjoyed for centuries.
It basically say's that if you have the opportunity to get an apple then minorities should have the same opportunity for an apple. It means not discriminating against minorities, by giving them the same opportunity. They are not given special consideration but rather the same consideration.
Most people are undecided about Affirmative action if they really don't understand what it is all about. You really need to look into it.

Affirmative action is one of the excuses they use now. Many white men were against civil rights legislation for minorities and women in the 1960s. Most of them are still alive and haven’t changed their minds much. A lot of those attitudes were passed on to the next generation.

It's not the only reason and it's not the main reason.
Personally, I find liberalism to be an insult to my intelligence, just as I find the social aspect of conservatism to be an insult to my intelligence. Liberalism tires to treat us all the same, as if our economic needs are the same as the person next to us, and frankly, they're not. I don't need the government deciding how I get my health care, how I fund my retirement, what school I can send my kid to, and insulting me by saying that because I make more money than the average person, I've somehow been lucky and thus should get bent over the table as far as taxation goes (and I'm far from the high end of the scale). Then again, I don't need the government telling me what to watch, what to read, what words I can or can't say, should or shouldn't say, and who I can sleep with (don't read anything into that, I am heterosexual and am in no need of therapy).
Both sides insult my intelligence by denying me the freedom to live as I see fit. Unfortunately, Americans have forgottten what that means, or why our Founding Fathers fought a war to give us that freedom.

You make a good point that I had not considered before.
Another reason is that the conservatives used to believe in smaller, less intrusive, lower taxes, government, but that began changing with Reagan's "War on Drugs" and now GWB has grown our government to the largest size ever.
But I've always thought it crap to single out anyone for special treatment. Two wrongs do not make a right, but our government still thinks it does.

no, the main reason is that libs think more with their heart and we think more with our brain. like the old saying. Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day , teach him to fish and he will eat for life. the program has changed from a helping hand to a give away.

the reason most are hostile towards liberals is because liberals are in favor of "doling out" rather than supporting personal dignity and worth!
