Pizza and Spaghettini...though spaghetti is really a Chinese idea, that was brought back to Italy by Marco Polo-and Italian explorer! The Italians just made it better by adding a really groovy Tomato sauce into the mix! But these would be my first four thoughts about Italy! #1. The Roman Empire. #2. Vino or Wine. #3. Venice and the Gondolas. #4. Serenading at the fine restaurant with Ti Amo and Thats Amore! Hows that for a warm-up on the first four things I would think about? #5.Benito Mussolini. #6. The Colliseum. #7. Sophia Loren. #8. Leonardo DaVinci #9. Gallileo. #10. Leaning Tower of Pisa. #10. Naples #11 Mafia #12 My all time favorite-Gellato(Ice Cream)!

Florence, the baptistry, the duomo, michelangelo, dante
Assissi...it is an absolute treasure and so much less commercial than other places.
Rome, the forum, the fountains--all of them, trying not to get hit by a cab, the vatican's fantastic art, being at a mcdonalds that had marble (it was easter and very hard to find anyplace to eat--i normally would stick w/ the fantastic local food), learning that pizza is often sold by weight, not the whole pie--this can get costly.
Venice--the glass from Murano--it's amazing.
in general, food, gelato, chianti, limoncello, and the gorgeous scenery driving through the country.....*sigh* i miss it!!

Italy has only lately been a single country. USA has regional accents and slang. Different areas of Italy have *very* different language. Sicilian isn't Neopolitan isn't Roman.
I think of Ste. Clare of Assisi, the patroness of television and claivoyants and of embroidresses.
Pasta.
