I'm looking back at my past English papers for revision and i used for the word allusion in the play Journey's End (irrelevent info but hey). Can anyone tell me what it means and use it in a context. I would like to use big english words in my exam and this would help. Thank you.

In literature, an implied or indirect reference to a person, event, or thing or to a part of another text.

Allusion is distinguished from such devices as direct quote and imitation or parody.

Most allusions are based on the assumption that there is a body of knowledge that is shared by the author and the reader and that therefore the reader will understand the author's allusion

Martin Luther King Jr. ALLUDED to the Gettysburg Address in starting his "I Have a Dream" speech by saying 'Five score years ago..."; his hearers were immediately reminded of Abraham Lincoln's "Four score and seven years ago", which opened the Gettysburg Address.

King's Allusion effectively called up parallels in two historic moments.

An allusion may become trite and stale through unthinking overuse, devolving into a mere cliché...

1. a passing or casual reference; an incidental mention of something, either directly or by implication: an allusion to Shakespeare.
2. the act of alluding.
3. Obsolete. a metaphor; parable.
Example: The prime minister made no allusion to the war in his speech.
Allusions usually come from a body of information that the author presumes the reader will know.

allusion means passing reference or providing information in indirect way.
this is like if u tell some one that "crow is black" this is a direct way to give information on the other hand if u say that plz consult the book " Knowlegde of birds" to know the color of crow. In this way u r giving direct information but providing him with a reference from where it can be consulted. Indirect way to pass knowledge.
" Bryan is a good teacher. He teaches in an allusive manner and this provokes students to read."

an allusion is the noun from the verb *to allude*.
when you allude to something you make an indirect reference to it. by what you say about one thing, you are making an indirect reference to something else.

so if someone says:
'we all know who is likely to get the promotion'
they could be *alluding* - or making *an allusion*- to the suspicion that i am having an affair with my boss!

allusions can be used to suggest connections between what you are trying to convey and other writings, without specifying what those other writings are.
so, eg, instead of saying 'he was behaving like bottom in midsummer night's dream' you could *allude* to the shakespeare play by saying something like 'he fell for her hook line and sinker; ***'s head and all.'
it makes the reader work harder to make the connections, and enables them to make much richer ones too, as you are not limiting what those connections are.
