Well to setup the wirless there are several steps that have to be taken. Once the router is working with wired connection, log back into the router and go the the wireless settings page and setup that information. Then go onto your computer and setup the wireless connection to match the router. You;ll be wireless in no time.
Here is the support page for your router.

Basically you have to get your laptop and router to "see" each other for wireless to work. You should be able to click on your wireless adapter and "view" wireless connections. Then click on your netgear router and get it connected.

Are you showing a wireless light on your laptop? Most of them have a switch or button to turn it on and off. With the cable connected access the setup page of your router. Go to the wireless security page and set up an encryption key, then use your laptop's wireless setup tool to match the settings. The wireless tool should indicate most of the possible problems, including signal strength. You should also rename the router ssid, as a similar router in your area will have the same default ssid and could be masking yours. Also choose a different channel, this can often prevent interference from other wireless equipment.
