My cousin has a dsl connection. For some reason, it always gets disconnected and we have to type ping in the command prompt. Why is it like that?

You may be at the far reaches of the dsl switch... you have to be a certain distance to have a good signal.. you can check with your provider to see how far you are.

Make sure the phone jack that the dsl is hook to is in good condition (no loose connections) check the dsl/phone line if there is any breaks or chew marks,if so replace it (you didn't say if they had pets )
other then that call your ISP (Internet service provider)
or try reinstalling their software that might help.

go into your settings for your Internet and have it set to always connected instead of on demand it should stop it from being disconnected good luck

Call your cousin's ISP!
