I have purchased a Dell Inspiron 640 m laptop. The specification says it has 8x DVD/CD Burner (DVD+/-RW).
So what DVD media should I buy, + or - ? I need to burn both data and video which should play in my standalone DVD player.

on the contrary, media (especially DVD media) are not the same. If you opt for the cheapy no-name brands you will find yourself burning many more coasters than with quality brand names. DVD-R is said to be more compatible with settop players vs DVD+R. You will also find variations in compatibility between brands and formats and your burner. It just depends. Try different brands and see which is best for your equipment.

I had a lot of problems with playback of dvd- (on playstation2 etc)...and so I intend to buy the dvd+ in future.

I have had no luck recording discs from dvd- to dvd+ (and the other way around)..so I might actually buy both - and use - depending on the disc type of what I want to copy.

The PC supports both.

Read the specs for your DVD player, then use what it supports.
