Yes, in some cases it will speed up Accessing our programs, and booting up your computer, and running some programs as well. Your computer works with the memory much like you would with papers on your desk. You can only fit so much and when you want to access more papers, you need to move some away or around. So the more "Desk size" the more papers you can have out.
The more RAM the more files you can have open, running, etc...

I have recently upgraded my computer from 512mb to 1.5gb RAM and can say I'm much happier with its performance. Its particuarly noticeable when I'm running a number of different programs at the same time.

If XP with Service Pack 2, 512MB RAM or more will speed things up considerably.

Run the Belarc Advisor to check for more RAM slots.

The the more RAM (memory) you have usually means the more speed you have. Running programs like CCleaner and Ashampoo WinOptimizer also helps. Both freely available programs.

In most cases yes but it also depends on your CPU. If you were to have for example a CPU running at 200 MHz it wouldn't matter if you have 8GB's of total memory, it would NEVER speed up your PC at all.

Yes, RAM is much faster than a hard disk, and it will speed up any OS or computer dramatically.
