I have a gateway GT4016 desktop which I mostly use for games and other stuff. The computer currently has an AMD 64 Athelon 939 socket processor on a BTX motherboard (factory board), I was wondering if a 939 Dual Core AMD will work with this board. The computer has an upgraded power supply, extra RAM and an ATI video card. The current OS is Windows EX Media Center Edition. If the swap can be made what if any other changes must be made to the computer? Thanks.

Check if the motherboard supports the newer CPU.

Run the free Belarc Advisor to ID the motherboard Make & Model.

Then, go to the mother board web site and read the specs.

It should be no problem, since they both use the 939 socket. But, you should definitely check with BTX to see if there is a firmware upgrade or any issues before purchasing.

Yes you can upgrade. Check to see what cpu's your motherboard supports. You should be able to drop any socket 939 chip in.

any major changes(such as cpu)normally result in you having to re activate your version of windows, which is not a problem if you are running a genuine version but must be done within 3 days instead of 30, another thing to consider the heatsink and cpu fan which will no doubt need to be upgraded to compensate for the extra heat generated from the bigger cpu.
but remember if your pc is under warranty still, then anything YOU do inside your case will result in the warranty being voided.

Dear Friend,
You can do that provided your MB appears in the HCL of AMD.com. Please be careful not to void the warranty.
Thank You...
