Their smell has soaked into the fabric of the house- particularly any soft furnishing- all the carpets will need to go. Curtains can be cleaned -washed or dry-cleaned- to get rid of their previous owner smell. Wallpaper is slightly affected, remove old wallpaper (carefully if it is an old house) and paper again over the top. If this is too much then lick over the old wallpaper with a couple of coats of paint - something nice from the Laura Ashley range covers particulalry well.
While you are figuring how to afford all this, get a dozen cans of spray Neutradol from the poundstore and give a good squirt in every room before you leave for work. Air the rooms (open windows) when you are at home. For lasting smell use essential oils in a saucer of water, leave on a sunny windowsill, or buy fragrant flowers in pots eg hyacinths Tesco do them quite cheaply.

It will eventually have one after you've lived in it a while. Air fresheners and candles only hide other scents, but if people have lived in it for a while their smell has sunk into the walls and carpet. Just give it some time. Burning candles doesn't make it your scent anyway. Just give it time, and it'll be yours.
edit: Also, don't smoke in your home. That is the number one way to make it smell terrible. It also discolors your home and furniture and destroys precious heirlooms and images and the paint on the walls.

Have the council fumigate the place, then you can start from scratch. Thats the only way to rid the old people smell. When that,s done ,bake bread, make coffee with coffee beans. Do not rely on sprays or candles. Jos sticks are good. Quality one,s that is.

Are you in the UK if yes you will find that when you leave your windows etc open in the coming summer months it will clear !!!! all you are doing at the moment is "masking" the smell::::::the old people previously probably did"nt open the windows a lot so the air became traped and stale !!!

Its best to have no smell at all and only introduce one when you need to. Also, natural smells are better than sprayed synthetic smells - lemons, sandlewood, lavender or spices. Just open the windows and get fresh air in.

to get rid of old musty smells or pet or smoking odours, sprinkle bicarbonate of soda on to your carpet(or floor) and leave overnight. simply hoover it up in the morning, bad smells are gone and the room is refreshed! and as for your own smell, just keep your home as clean as you can and it will always smell fresh. hope this helps good luck.

If you want to have the house smell like it has been lived in and smell like you, just go around each room and drop a f..t in them.
