I'm asking because I got into school in Boston, and am wondering if "the weather" is enough to be a negative factor. I used to live in Philadelphia, but moved to San Diego in 2001. I'm thinking "If I could handle Philly for 6 years, and Boston isn't much different, I'm sure I'll be fine there for college." But I've forgotten how Philly is, and do not know if Boston is different!
Thanks.

They are similar. However the Boston winters are longer in terms of the last frost typically being the end of May not the middle of April. If you are close to the coastline they tend to be equally moderate but not horrendous in either winter or summer. They definitely are not like San Diego. However for a student (particularly if living on campus or near the campus) getting around and going anywhere with friends is not so tough.

I live in Boston and am originally from the Washington DC area so not quite Philly - but anyway the temperatures in Boston are certainly colder and as others have mentioned, the winters are longer in Boston and since it's right on the coast, it can be quite windy and cold during the winter. Summers are more pleasant though. And it's not a LOT worse than Philly, I would say.

Boston is colder longer but the difference is minor....and as
it's becoming evident, climate history is becoming less reliable.
The data does show about a degree and a half difference
in average temperature between Boston and Philly....not a lot.
The largest obstacle will be getting used to it again, though a few nice days in the fall should help you forget about San Diego.

I lived in New York and now live in Boston. Boston can be brutal. The temperature is not as much of a factor as previously said. But the wind will kill you! If you can survive, or have survived Philly, you can survive Boston.
