No, you need to connect to a central server at MSN.

No. MSN Messenger logs into a central MSN Server.
There used to be a real Windows Messenger, but I think they took that out in all distros after 98.

There was a professional version of Windows Messenger intended for office lan use. It was a bit of a dog's breakfast to make it work.

i not agree who say without connect the Internet can use MSN.i say cannot use massanger without connection with internet you konw why ? my answer is office LAN juz only direct connect to others computer in office only but MSN massanger or some thing like MSN it must loggin to main MSN server with always connect to internet .

No, msn is just like aim and yim. You can only connect to it if you have an active internet connection.

no I dont think you can as messenger uses the internet to communicate with the other users on your list. To do what your asking would require another piece of software.
