A few weeks back my computer crashed, did a system check on my drives and then told me one of my internal hard drives could not be found (or the RAID wasn't working - I'm not entirely sure on those details). I finally got it working using an Intel Utility on my computer. Since then, the drive in my computer has been making a sound. The best way I can describe it is if you imagine the whirring sound a hard drive or a CD drive starting up - it continually sounds like it is speeding up then slowing down then speeding up etc. I would like to know if this is normal or if, for some reason, the drive is failing and being worked to hard since the crash and needs to be replaces. Thanks!

It shouldn't make all that much noise. It probably wont die tomorrow but the sound will probably get worse. I would start backing your files up now to another drive or at least CD/DVD. Once your hard drive dies, no getting it off there short of sending it to a lab :(

Our pc hard drive has been making similar noises to our washing machine for the past 5 years, but it is still chugging along quite happily.

Dear Friend,
This may mean a lot of problems... It may not... So, to be on the safer side please kindly back-up your Hard Drive to a DVD. But the noise doesn't mean it will fail right now... It may pull weeks... But please replace it with warranty if possible...
Thank You...

Back up all your Personal Data NOW!!!

Then, replace the drive, it's dying.

SCSI drives make grinding noises when they are about to fail... you may have a couple of weeks before one of them fails.
