A laptop is a PC and will connect to the web just like a desktop PC will. An advent is fine for what you want. Get a broadband connection and use the Advent's USB port or network port to connect to the broadband router and all will cool surfingly cool for you and you daughter. Don't forget to have anti virus software installed before you connect to the web there are a lot of bad stuff out there for the unwary. Hope this helps a little.

I think your daughter would probably have a better idea if she is living on her own. I think you may be referring to a cable modem or cable internet connection when you say cable telephone. As long as the laptop has a jack either on the side or in the back that looks like a really big telephone jack, then she will be able to hook it up directly to the cable modem. This type of connection (really big telephone jack) is called an ethernet connection. She would need an ethernet cable to connect the two.

The cable company will provide the modem you'll need, and will send along some cables.
One of those cables should plug in from the back of the modem to the Laptop.
The cable company might give you a couple settings to make it work, but cable internet is very easy.
You can have other cable devices off of the same cable. You can have tv, internet, and a telephone on the same cable no problem.
