Someone has told me that Holland has raised its minimum age for marriage to 21 recently. I find this very hard to believe since the minimum age for everything else in Holland is a lot lower.

Can someone clarify this for me please?

I don't know where the rumour of 21 being the legal age for marriage comes from, but it's not true.

Dutch law on 'huwelijk' (marriage) stipulates that both partners must be 18. (Article 31, Dutch Civil Code)

For individuals aged 16-17 to get married, a signed, medical statement must be produced proving that the female partner is pregnant or already has given birth.

In very special -almost theoretical- circumstances, the minister of Justice has the authority to approve a marriage at an even younger age than 16. Being a civil servant with the Dutch justice dept., I've never seen that happen.
