Its not a man it is a women, Mitochondrial Eve she is a early human that lived about 150,000. Every living human today can be traced back to this women. We all share her Mito. DNA. So I guess she has played the biggest role in humanity.
But if you really want a guy then that would be Mitochondrial Adam, dont get confused with the names it has nothing to do with religion.
I am not religious so I dont believe Jesus was the most important man in the history of humanity. Without these Mit. Eve and Mito. Adam humans could be very different to what we are today so I think these two have made the biggest contribution because they essentially formed humans as we are today
Look it up here if you want to know more

Oh, but guys, JESUS HAS TO BE the most important man in the whole friggin' history of humanity. Look, Christian or no, we've all been influenced by him - heck, the whole of the western world has. Because Jesus inspired the Bible, which in turn led to many, many things to happen. That's why there was the Prohibition, suppression of women's rights, the Crusades, the Spanish Inquisition, and all. Jesus and Christianity influenced the course of history for millennia - for better or for worse. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a clergyman. Bach, the musician and composer, believed in making music to serve God. Let's not forget that.

Humanity is as old as 2 million years. Whom will you pick out? Different ages throw up different heroes. God in Gita says that he will take birth from time to time to establish dharma and root out evil from the face of this universe. In the recent history, I consider Mahatma Gandhi, as an important person, who made a lot of difference in our thinking.

Your friends answered Jesus, and for them this may well be correct. Your question is meaningless without a context, and person has his own. I, for example, do not think in terms of one person who was more important that every single other. Do you?
